Jitsi is a set of open-source projects that allows you to easily build and deploy secure videoconferencing solutions. At the heart of Jitsi are Jitsi Videobridge and Jitsi Meet, which let you have conferences on the internet, while other projects in the community enable other features such as audio, dial-in, recording, and simulcasting.

Zoom, the popular-by-necessity video conferencing platform, has seen an explosion in users as the coronavirus pandemic forces people to work from home.

But with that increase in users has come greater scrutiny of Zoom’s privacy and security. With widespread reports of Zoombombing (where strangers dial in your channel with something rude and disruptive), the company’s procedures have been called into question by the New York Attorney General, and prompted a class-action lawsuit.

Zoom has been criticized for ignoring privacy before. A year ago, a researcher found that 4 million Zoom user cameras were potentially vulnerable to remote takeover without you knowing.

Several people who build and develop privacy-oriented tools recommend Jitsi as a more secure alternative to Zoom.

Emil Ivov, one of the founders of Jitsi, said what sets it apart from other video conferencing services is that it’s low friction. Creating a meeting is as simple as typing your name in, and it’s just one click to join. The company uses WebRTC, or Web Realtime Communications, which enables peer to peer video, data, and audio communication between two web browsers. So on desktops there are no downloads and no accounts needed, said Ivov.

“We are really mindful about privacy and security,” said Ivov. “We require no personal data and fully support anonymous use. We are also open source. This is where we are truly unique. If you have any concerns about how we run our service, then you can just go and run your own! It only takes 15 minutes.”

Being open source also means anyone can scrutinize its software. But Jitsi does not feature end-to-end encryption.

“For now this is simply not possible with WebRTC, although the whole community is looking into the problem and we are hoping there will soon be solutions,” said Ivov. “For the time being, however, all your data is encrypted in-flight using DTLS-SRTP [a protocol which adds encryption and ensures message authentication and integrity] as per the WebRTC standard. None of your media content eaves your computer unencrypted.”

Features:

Unlike other videoconferencing technologies, Jitsi Videobridge, the heart of Jitsi, passes everyone’s video and audio to all participants, rather than mixing them first.

The result is lower latency, better quality and, if you are running your own service, a much more scalable and inexpensive solution.

Jitsi is compatible with WebRTC, the open standard for Web communication.

Jitsi supports advanced video routing concepts such as simulcast, bandwidth estimations, scalable video coding and many others.

Ubuntu and Debian packages for easy installation

Jitsi is a favorite videoconferencing solution for anyone with privacy concerns, journalists, for example. There’s a reason so many people use Jitsi Meet as a Skype alternative for video conferencing. Try it out and download it for free.

Recently I was running out of room on my hard drives. I knew that I had a lot of duplicate files and in my quest to find them all and free up space on my computer I would need software to do the searches and find file matches. But how? There are a few free options available which we will cover in the next article but this particular program "Speedy Duplicate Finder" is very nice.

- Scanning 10,000 files takes less than half a second!

- You can search for duplicates not only in folders but on entire disk!

- Easily filter group of duplicates by Kind, by Extension or by Size

Those are the key benefits of the app. It DOES scan for duplicate files extremely fast saving you a ton of time that the other free options cannot do quickly. The software itself also looks beautiful.

You can take a test drive of the software by opening your Ubuntu Software program and looking for it using the keyword "speedy" and you should see it titled "Speedy Duplicate Finder".

The free version allows you to remove 300mb of duplicates, otherwise it does come at a price of $19.95. You can learn more about it here:

https://qiplex.com/software/speedy-duplicate-finder/?ref=full-l,26.332

The company that makes it also has several other programs that look helpful and you can buy their entire range of products for one flat price of $29.

One of my favorite apps on linux is FeedReader. Long ago when I used Google products they had a great RSS reader built in, but they phased it out and got rid of it. If you are a fan of reading blogs but dont want all of the emails for new articles piling into your inbox, FeedReader is a very nice app to organize and handle off of your RSS news.

Lets just get right to it and install which is very easy with a PPA in the terminal. Cut and paste each line into a terminal and press enter...

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:eviltwin1/feedreader-stable

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install feedreader

The only caveat is this is not a true RSS manager but more of an RSS client. You will need to create an external account on one of the RSS web services (usually free) like InoReader, Feedly, or Tiny Tiny RSS. The beauty of this is that your blog feeds will all by synced up.

FeedReader has some nice features such as sharing an article to your Pocket, Instapaper or Readability accounts, as well as desktop notifications of new articles, keyboard shortcuts, and tagging of articles. As seen in my FeedReader image above, we list our subscribed blogs in one area on the left side, however if you have a lot of blogs you read you can make and group them into categories. Linux blogs, home improvement blogs, science blogs, whatever your desires.

Another bonus is you can even add YouTube pages to your feed! Example of a feed would be to go to their YouTube page and click onto the pages "Videos" feed and thats what you would plug into FeedReader. Heres an example of a YouTube link...

The newest version of elementary OS 0.4, dubbed Loki, has landed today and it is impressive. More than a year in development, elementary OS ships with a carefully curated selection of apps that cater to every day needs so you can spend more time using your computer and less time cleaning up bloatware.

One of the major new features of elementary OS is their new Open Source App Store.

The AppCenter brings handcrafted apps and extensions directly to your desktop. Quickly discover new apps and easily update the ones you already have. No license keys, no subscriptions, no trial periods.

Loki is being built with the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS repository, which means it comes with Gtk 3.18, Vala 0.32, and Linux 4.4 as well as a multitude of other updated libraries. Loki also removes Ubuntu's Ayatana with a brand new set of wingpanel indicators for a better experience.

From their website...

"elementary OS is Open Source... Our code is available for review, scrutiny, modification, and redistribution by anyone. We dont make advertising deals and we don't collect sensitive personal data. Our only income is directly from our users. elementary OS is Safe & Secure. We're built on Linux: the same software powering the U.S Department of Defense, the Bank of China, and more"

If you want an impressive, beautiful and snappy linux desktop based on Ubuntu, give elementary OS a try.

There have been several instances where it would be more comfortable to run an Android app on my computer than to use my smart phone. I have tried running Android in a VirtualBox and it does work, however, Android is its own OS that you still need to boot into. But what if you could run an Android APK directly in Ubuntu? Well.... you can!*

Google released a Chrome app named ARC Welder, which allows you to run Android apps if you’re on the Chrome OS or using the Chrome web browser. Grab the ARC Welder Chrome app here (200MB)...

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/arc-welder/emfinbmielocnlhgmfkkmkngdoccbadn

Just open the link in Google Chrome or search for ARC Welder in the Chrome app store and install it.

Installing Android apps take a little bit of extra steps, but not a big deal. First, find the Android app you want in the Google Play Store...

https://play.google.com/store/apps

Copy the weblink of the app and paste it in the APK-DL website...

http://apk-dl.com/

This will generate an APK download link for the app. Once you have downloaded an APK file, open the ARC Welder app in your Chrome browser (thru the browser apps link). The first time you run ARC Welder it will ask you where to store files for the apps. Create a folder wherever you like before installing an APK. I created a folder in my HOME directory. Once you do that, simply add your APK file now.

You'll also be asked about the size of your app such as tablet or phone, landscape or portrait. Put them to your liking and then install!

* Here is the caveat. Not ALL Android apps are going to work. Some do, some dont. There’s no guarantee the apps you try will work or that they’ll be usable.

I originally did this so I can run an investment app called "Robinhood" (pictured at the top of this post) to buy and sell stocks without paying any commission fees. The app is nice, but its much easier to use it on a desktop computer. Other apps I have tried that work are basic programs like "Bitcoin Checker" and "Coin Pirates" and "Backgammon Free". Programs that require heavy graphics like car racing games probably wont work. Hulu DID work for me, Netflix did NOT. Your mileage may very. Have fun and Good Luck!

The third beta of OpenShot 2.0 has been officially released! To install it, add the PPA by using the Terminal commands below:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:openshot.developers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install openshot openshot-doc

Now that OpenShot is installed, you should be able to launch it from your Applications menu, or from the terminal ($ openshot-qt). Every time OpenShot has an update, you will be prompted to update to the newest version. It's a great way to test our latest features.

Smoother Animation
Animations are now silky smooth because of improved anti-aliasing support in the libopenshot compositing engine. Zooming, panning, and rotation all benefit from this change.

Audio Quality Improvements
Audio support in this new version is vastly superior to previous versions. Popping, crackling, and other related audio issues have been fixed.

Autosave
A new autosave engine has been built for OpenShot 2.0, and it’s fast, simple to configure, and will automatically save your project at a specific interval (if it needs saving). Check the Preferences to be sure it’s enabled (it will default to enabled for new users).

Automatic Backup and Recovery
Along with our new autosave engine, a new automatic backup and recovery feature has also been integrated into the autosave flow. If your project is not yet saved… have no fear, the autosave engine will make a backup of your unsaved project (as often as autosave is configured for), and if OpenShot crashes, it will recover your most recent backup on launch.

Project File Improvements
Many improvements have been made to project file handling, including relative paths for built-in transitions and improvements to temp files being copied to project folders (i.e. animated titles). Projects should be completely portable now, between different versions of OpenShot and on different Operating Systems. This was a key design goal of OpenShot 2.0, and it works really well now.

Improved Exception Handling
Integration between libopenshot (our video editing library) and openshot-qt (our PyQt5 user interface) has been improved. Exceptions generated by libopenshot are now passed to the user interface, and no longer crash the application. Users are now presented with a friendly error message with some details of what happened. Of course, there is still the occasional “hard crash” which kills everything, but many, many crashes will now be avoided, and users more informed on what has happened.

Preferences Improvements
There are more preferences available now (audio preview settings - sample rate, channel layout, debug mode, etc…), including a new feature to prompt users when the application will “require a restart” for an option to take effect.

Improved Stability on Windows
A couple of pretty nasty bugs were fixed for Windows, although in theory they should have crashed on other platforms as well. But for whatever reason, certain types of crashes relating to threading only seem to happen on Windows, and many of those are now fixed.

New Version Detection
OpenShot will now check the most recent released version on launch (from the openshot.org website) and descretely prompt the user by showing an icon in the top right of the main window. This has been a requested feature for a really long time, and it’s finally here. It will also quietly give up if no Internet connection is available, and it runs in a separate thread, so it doesn’t slow down anything.

Metrics and Anonymous Error Reporting
A new anonymous metric and error reporting module has been added to OpenShot. It can be enabled / disabled in the Preferences, and it will occasionally send out anonymous metrics and error reports, which will help me identify where crashes are happening. It’s very basic data, such as “WEBM encoding error - Windows 8, version 2.0.6, libopenshot-version: 0.1.0”, and all IP addresses are anonymized, but will be critical to help improve OpenShot over time.

Improved Precision when Dragging
Dragging multiple clips around the timeline has been improved. There were many small issues that would sometimes occur, such as extra spacing being added between clips, or transitions being slightly out of place. These issues have been fixed, and moving multiple clips now works very well.

Debug Mode
In the preferences, one of the new options is “Debug Mode”, which outputs a ton of extra info into the logs. This might only work on Linux at the moment, because it requires the capturing of standard output, which is blocked in the Windows and Mac versions (due to cx_Freeze). I hope to enable this feature for all OSes soon, or at least to provide a “Debug” version for Windows and Mac, that would also pop open a terminal/command prompt with the standard output visible.

Updated Translations
Updates to 78 supported languages have been made. A huge thanks to the translators who have been hard at work helping with OpenShot translations. There are over 1000 phrases which require translation, and seeing OpenShot run so seamlessly in different languages is just awesome! I love it!

Lots of Bug fixes

In addition to all the above improvements and fixes, here are many other smaller bugs and issues that have been addressed in this version.

Prompt before overwriting a video on export

Fixed regression while previewing videos (causing playhead to hop around)

Default export format set to MP4 (regardless of language)

Fixed regression with Cutting / Split video dialog

Fixed Undo / Redo bug with new project

Backspace key now deletes clips (useful with certain keyboards and laptop keyboards)

Fixed bug on Animated Title dialog not updating progress while rendering

Added multi-line and unicode support to Animated Titles

Improved launcher to use distutils entry_points

Brendan Eich, one of the co-founders of the Mozilla project (Firefox browser) is developing a new web browser promising to block intrusive ads and 3rd party trackers. Enter BRAVE built for Linux, Windows, OSX, iOS and Android...

https://brave.com/

Brave's browser, still in early development, speeds up web pages by stripping out not just ads but also other page elements that track online behavior and web elements used to deliver ads. By removing advertisements and trackers, Braves browser will speed up page loading considerably. It loads pages 2x to 4x faster than other smart phone browsers & up to 2x faster than other browsers for personal computers.

Blocking ads however could be a challenge for the Brave team as advertising helps fund websites and bloggers content. The browsers work around is to eventually display new ads from their own pool of advertisers and connect Bitcoin as a method for users to pay website owners directly for the content users are viewing for free. Its a new way of doing things for sure and could disrupt Googles ad network which is Googles biggest source of revenue.

Brave has been built out of the open source Chromium browser, which is the foundation for Google's Chrome browser. An interesting choice considering Brave is essentially trying to take market cap away from Google. Has Eich and his Brave team averted the ad blocking war or created a new style war?

All of Braves source packages have been made available on GitHub. We managed to compile it on Ubuntu 16.04, but ran into problems. The GitHub page includes a readme file for installation however its really incomplete right now as of 1/22/16. We also ran into problems with the newest version of Node.js 5.xx not being supported by our newest version of Ubuntu. However, installation of Node.js 5.xx may work fine on Ubuntu 15.10 or older, thus getting the Brave browser installed on Ubuntu.

Keep your eyes open on their GitHub for updated installation information such as DEB files or PPAs for an easier way to install Brave.
The first beta release of OpenShot 2.0 is available to Kickstarter supporters and a much wider testing effort has started. For those who supported OpenShots Kickstarter, they will gain early access and receive a separate update with links to installers. For everyone else, the source code has been published and is available online, but its recommended to wait a little longer, until the installers are released for everyone.

For anyone who has looked for a video editor in Ubuntu, Openshot is really really nice. I have personally used it on several family occasions (weddings, birthdays, and a 50th anniversary) and it has produced great results.

One relative who was a film director in the 70s, moving on to live stage show productions in the 80s and 90s was really impressed with the work I did with OpenShot.

Definitely give OpenShot a try for your video editing needs!

If you really want to test the current version 1.1.3, there is a DEB installer here...
On December 10th, Elementary announced the release of the elementary OS 0.3.2 Freya computer operating system.

This new release 0.3.2 of Freya improves the support for 64-bit UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) and SecureBoot systems, as well as machines running BIOS and Legacy Boot, fixing the dreaded GRUB boot error has finally been patched.

There are some new user-visible features as well implemented in elementary OS 0.3.2 Freya. Lots of updates to the Applications Menu, which now lists the Settings separately from the applications during searches. It returns search results for actions from applications' quicklists, such as Scratch's "New Document" or Geary's "Compose Message."

The Archive Manager and Font Viewer utilities were hidden from the Applications Menu, but users can access them via the Files file manager and the built-in search engine. Other minor visual issues related to dark applications have been fixed, along with refinements to panel's and windows' shadows.

The elementary developers also managed to add improvements to the internationalization support in elementary OS, including the addition of 22 new language translations.

Existing Elementary OS 0.3 Freya users can easily upgrade to version 0.3.2 just by running the Software Updater utility and applying all available updates. Those of you new to Elementary OS can download the Elementary OS 0.3.2 Freya release right now via the project's website link below...
George Hotz is a 26-year-old hacker who says he built a self-driving car in a month. Sounds absurd, right? George is using the linux operating system Ubuntu to power it. Bloomberg's Ashlee Vance was skeptical too, so he went to test drive the 2016 Acura that Hotz retrofitted in his garage. For those of you who are concerned about three letter agencies or anyone else... CryptKeeper works great. You can install it by finding it in the Ubuntu Software Center or via the terminal window using:

sudo apt-get install cryptkeeper

To launch CryptKeeper, find it by clicking the Ubuntu icon at the top left and searching for it. Once you open the app it will put a little key symbol on your top panel.

To create an encrypted protected folder, click on the Cryptkeeper key applet and select "New Encrypted Folder"

Input a folder name and where to save the folder (maybe in your Home folder? or on your Desktop?) and then click the "Forward" button.

The next screen will ask you to input the password you will use to unlock the folder each time you mount it. Then, click the "Forward" button.

Your new encrypted folder will be created and will be ready to use!

SUPER EASY!

Any time you want to access your encrypted folder, click on the CryptKeeper key applet on the top panel and select the folder you want.

It will ask you to type your password to mount it.

THATS IT!

You can unmount the folder also by going to thr key applet and unchecking the folder.

Theres also a few options in the applet such as deleting the folder all together or changing its password.

The program is a little tricky in that your encrypted folder will auto unmount after a few minutes. Once it does, the folder will still look mounted, but appear blank if you go into it. It might be confusing at first but you'll get used to it. Personally, I like to go into the CryptKeeper preferences and change the "unmount after idle" setting to 60 minutes. This forces me to mount or unmount manually.

This is a great program if you dont like to encrypt your entire /home folder when installing Ubuntu.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37423427.post-8810517939219451642015-07-23T14:07:00.002-07:002015-07-23T17:43:35.405-07:00Linux Lite for older computers

At work I use several older desktops for various functions. As in "older" I mean 2006 or so :) One system is used primarily for the internet if a customer needs internet access, another system is set up for a cheap live webcam to monitor outdoor premises, and so on.

In looking for an easy to install OS that is Ubuntu/Debian based I have had MUCH success with Linux Lite. Linux Lite is a beginner-friendly Linux distribution based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and featuring the Xfce desktop.

Linux Lite is delightfully lightweight and runs fast & responsive on our old computers which are single core Pentium 4 - 3.0Ghtz, with 2GB of memory. I have had problems in the past with graphics while installing Xubuntu or Lubuntu, but not so with Linux Lite.

A ton of time is also saved with pre-installed programs like VLC, LibreOffice, GIMP, Firefox, Steam, and Thunderbird.

It also has its own built in program called Lite Software which makes life super easy for you to install other useful apps including: Chrome browser, Chromium browser, Dropbox, Ubuntu Games Pack, Pidgin chat, Google Talk plugin, Java, KeePassX password manager, PlayOnLinux for windows games, Ubuntu Restricted Extras, Skype, TeamViewer, Deluge torrent app, OpenShot video editor, VirtualBox, and XBMC.

If you have older computers and other distros are not working out for you, definitely give Linux Lite a try!

If you are ever concerned about private messaging, BitMessage offers an easy solution. Bitmessage is a P2P communications protocol used to send encrypted messages to another person or to many subscribers. It is decentralized and trustless, meaning that you need-not inherently trust any entities like root certificate authorities. It uses strong authentication which means that the sender of a message cannot be spoofed, and it aims to hide "non-content" data, like the sender and receiver of messages, from passive eavesdroppers like those running warrantless wiretapping programs. If Bitmessage is completely new to you, you may wish to start by reading the whitepaper:

https://bitmessage.org/bitmessage.pdf

Windows, Mac and Source Code available here:

https://bitmessage.org/wiki/Main_Page

A community-based forum for questions, feedback, and discussion is also available on the subreddit:

http://www.reddit.com/r/bitmessage/

To install BitMessage on Ubuntu (and other linux distros) go to your terminal and type:

git clone git://github.com/Bitmessage/PyBitmessage.git

Once its finished, run this...

python2.7 PyBitmessage/src/bitmessagemain.py

BitMessage should now be installed with a link your menu or dash or by running that last line in your terminal window again.

* You may need to install git and python for the codes to work.

Give it a try and good luck!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37423427.post-60882234843415589822015-04-13T14:50:00.000-07:002015-12-19T19:07:04.990-08:00Free Ubuntu Stickers

I have the beta version of Freya Elementary OS installed on one of my laptops and it works great. Its easy to install and its beautiful. It is crafted by designers and developers who believe that computers can be easy, fun, and gorgeous. By putting design first, Elementary ensures they wont compromise on quality or usability. Its also based on Ubuntu 14.04 making it easy to install PPAs.

Today, the Linux Mint team announced the release of the LMDE 2 “Betsy” MATE desktop as well as the Cinnamon desktop environments.

LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) is a very exciting distribution, targeted at experienced users, which provides the same environment as Linux Mint but uses Debian as its package base, instead of Ubuntu.

LMDE is less mainstream than Linux Mint, it has a much smaller user base, it is not compatible with PPAs, and it lacks a few features. That makes it a bit harder to use and harder to find help for, so it is not recommended for novice users.

Important release info, system requirements, upgrade instructions and more can be found about these releases directly on Linux Mint website.

Torchlight II is a dungeon crawler game that lets you chose to play as a few different classes. The basic concept is the same as nearly all dungeon crawlers: Explore, level up, find gear, beat the boss, rinse and repeat.

A few years ago I really enjoyed playing the original Torchlight. It worked great on Ubuntu. There were some shading issues with the 3D rendering making your characters faces invisible, but those little problems are of no worry in this new version. Torchlight 2 has improved almost every aspect of the original game.

About a month ago STEAM launched Torchlight 2 with linux support. The new version is cross platform multi-player supported, game saves work across all platforms, and game modding is even supported.

Installation through Steam is simple. The download was about 1GB in size. At work I have a slimline computer with a Pentium G2020 processor, 4 GB ram, and a 1GB nVidia GeForce 210 video card. Graphics are superb. It doesnt get much better than this. I even maxxed out all of the graphics settings. Game play is smooth and enjoyable. Ive just been having a fun time going deeper and deeper into the dungeons fighting new bad guys. The scenery alone is worth it. Cant wait to try multiplayer!

You can even zoom in with the mouse wheel and fight your battles up close!

Here are the recommended system specs...

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (or similar, Debian-based distro)

x86/x86_64-compatible, 2.0GHz or better processor

2GB System RAM

1.7 GB hard drive space (subject to change)

OpenGL 2.0 compatible 3D graphics card* with at least 256 MB of addressable memory (ATI Radeon x1600 or NVIDIA equivalent)

A broadband Internet connection (For Steam download and online multiplayer)

Online multiplayer requires a free Runic Account.

Requires Steam.

The game itself costs $20 on Steam, but you can get it a part of the Humble Bundle 14 set of games if you pay at least $6.15. If you are considering Torchlight 2, you have until April 14 when the Humble Bundle deal expires.

Torchlight II is a great hack-n-slash every fan of this type of games should own. It will entertain you for hours and hours and you will hardly repeat boring actions like farming and grinding. A must have, for such a low price.

I enjoyed this game so much I'm giving it a 5 out of 5 rating :)
I am always in search of new and interesting wallpapers. For many years Ubuntu has had a great Flickr group that is used to help decide which wallpapers make it into each new Ubuntu release. Most of them dont make it, but there are definitely some great quality images in this Flickr group. You can easily spend an hour here and pick favorites.

Check it out:

And here we go! The NEW I Heart Ubuntu website takes a more modern magazine style look. Some of the new features include: an easy categories section at the top, an easy search feature at the top right, the 6 top featured articles right on the main part of your screen, and our popular posts are easy to find on the right side too. We now have a "Video of the Week" on the righthand side and our easy to see social icons at the bottom of the page. We have our RSS link easily available at the top and bottom of our site now. Commenting on articles is available via Disqus and Facebook. Our website also (finally) looks great and easy to use on mobile devices.

We will also begin covering other linux distros but will focus primarily on Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Elementary OS.

We have a bit more work to do yet such as tagging & labeling 460+ articles correctly, building up our Facebook page (you can "like us" on the right side), as well as focusing on the key points you have all recommended based on our survey.

Thanks again for everyones input! Our three websites I Heart Ubuntu, Daily Ubuntu and Crypto Reporter combined have well over 4 million views. Stay tuned & lets make I Heart Ubuntu a destination once again!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37423427.post-37188796375342271112015-04-07T13:19:00.003-07:002015-04-10T11:08:20.717-07:00Please Take Our SurveyWe would love your input.
This is a great program used to help protect your privacy.

Metadata consists of information that characterizes data. Metadata is used to provide documentation for data products. In essence, metadata answers who, what, when, where, why, and how about every facet of the data that is being documented.

Metadata within a file can tell a lot about you. Cameras record data about when a picture was taken and what camera was used. Office documents like PDF or Office automatically adds author and company information to documents and spreadsheets.

Maybe you don't want to disclose that information on the web.

MAT can only remove metadata from your files, it does not anonymise their content, nor can it handle watermarking, steganography, or any too custom metadata field/system.

If you really want to be anonymous, use a format that does not contain any metadata, or better yet, use plain-text.

These are the formats supported to some extent:

Portable Network Graphics (PNG)
JPEG (.jpeg, .jpg, ...)
Open Document (.odt, .odx, .ods, ...)
Office Openxml (.docx, .pptx, .xlsx, ...)
Portable Document Fileformat (.pdf)
Tape ARchive (.tar, .tar.bz2, .tar.gz)
ZIP (.zip)
MPEG Audio (.mp3, .mp2, .mp1, .mpa)
Ogg Vorbis (.ogg)
Free Lossless Audio Codec (.flac)
Torrent (.torrent)

The President of the United States and his birth certificate would have greatly benefited from software such as MAT.

You can install MAT with this terminal command:

sudo apt-get install mat

We're getting back to some of the old basic apps that a lot of people used to use in Ubuntu. Many of them still work great and work great without any internet connection needed.

Tasque (pronounced like “task”) is a simple task management app (TODO list) for the Linux Desktop and Windows. It supports syncing with the online service Remember the Milk or simply storing your tasks locally.

The main window has the ability to complete a task, change the priority, change the name, and change the due date without additional property dialogs.

When a user clicks on a task priority, a list of possible priorities is presented and when selected, the task is re-prioritized in the order you wish.

When you click on the due date, a list of the next seven days is presented along with an option to remove the date or select a date from a calendar.

A user completes a task by clicking the check box on a task. The task is crossed out indicating it is complete and a timer begins counting down to the right of the task. When the timer is done, the task is removed from view.

As mentioned, Tasque has the ability to save tasks locally or backend used Remember the Milk, a free online to-do list. On one of my computers saving my tasks using RTM works great, on my computer at work, it wont sync my tasks. I havent figure out why, but I will post any updates here once I get it working or find a workaround.

You can install Tasque from the Ubuntu Software Center or with this terminal command:

sudo apt-get install tasque

All in all, Tasque is a great little task app. Really simple to use!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
