Install Diablo 3 on Ubuntu

With the release of Diablo 3, many Ubuntu users want to know... will it even work on Ubuntu? The answer in short is - YES!

The easiest way to install Diablo III on Ubuntu is to use PlayOnLinux and use the download option from Blizzard. More info here:

http://www.playonlinux.com/en/commentaires-1043.html

If you dont yet have PlayOnLinux installed on your Ubuntu computer, install it via the instructions here for your version of Ubuntu: http://www.playonlinux.com/en/download.html

That is the easy way to install Diablo 3 on Ubuntu.

There is another way, and that is to directly use the disc and install via WINE. The Beta of Diablo 3 worked great on Ubuntu and so does the official release. More info here on tips to install Diablo 3 on Ubuntu with WINE...

If you dont have WINE installed on Ubuntu you can install it via the terminal by inputing these commands...

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install wine1.5

We will be testing this out in the next day and will update the site with new info.

(it is xubuntu actually) Whenever i try to install it it says i dont have enough memory on my hard drive :( even though i clearly have 14G which is more than 12G last time i checked:) . Is there anything i can do or do i have to try to find more to uninstall before i can install diablo 3?

Extremely slow FPS compared Windows though...

  4. slow FPS... Ive noticed on older computers running Unity you will get SLOW FPS. Dont know if this is an option but using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS would really help, or upgrading memory or if you want to use Unity with Diablo 3 you would need a newer computer. I have a relative running D3 on a new system with 12GB memory and its great. I realize a new system is not always an option... I cant even afford a new computer right now! You might try lowering the graphics settings to something more playable. On Windows games running in WINE Ive noticed games not picking the correct video settings, so yours might be maxxed out. Check it and if possible lower your settings a bit.

  5. About Diablo 3 and Ubuntu.
I hate Windows but I have to say that for some games where speed is important i.e. Diablo 3, you will need to have Windows because in wine is not working as good as in Microsoft OS.
I am Linux user for a few years and I did not play in any games for a several years, but when Diablo 3 lunch - I come back to games.
Diablo 3 on Ubuntu could be installed under wine. They are several possibilities - PlayonLinux is good choice and is free.
Unfortunately in my case, Diablo 3 had lags (doesn’t matter how powerful machine you have) and it was very frustrating when I got lag and than I have died.
So if you have machine with reasonable specification, the best solution is to run Windows XP in VMplayer and have Diablo installed there, in my case is working perfect :-)
No authentication problems, no lags, no connection problem- after "Leaving game". It's working like it should be.

I would like to have this on my Bootable 32GB USB Flash Drive of Unbuntu 11.10

Is it possible to have PlayonLinux & Diablo 3 on my USB and run it after booting instead of having to Reinstalling them every time i boot to my USB?

  7. I would recommend a 64GB USB flash drive instead. My sister is running just like this... Everything installed on the flash drive. Ubuntu and WINE and Diablo 3. While it should all fit on a 32GB drive, there will be endless updates to Diablo 3 and over time it could grow well over 20 or 30GB (eventually). Might as well start off with 64GB drive now.

But yes, it is completely possible. I have Ubuntu as the only OS on all my computers with WINE installed on all of them. Then I have WoW installed on a 64GB chip and carry it with me and can play it on any ocmputer I have. Works great.
