Ailurus - Application Installer & GNOME Tweak

Ailurus, a GNOME assistant for newcomers

Ailurus is a personal assistant which enables the user to install software from repositories, enable unofficial repositories, manage GNOME appearance and themes and teach useful tips about how to use Linux.

Everybody has been, at least once in his life, a newbie. Expert linux users know how hard is to change platforms and get used to a new environment. Ailurus aims at helping those new users, providing them with an easy-to-use interface to install software packages (it works both on Ubuntu and Fedora), to modify the appearance of GNOME and to learn some useful tips about Linux, the new environment they will be dealing with. What most of the people don't know though is that Ailurus can be useful also for those users who are not newbies anymore. Ailurus, unlike the official Software Center, offers a really easy-to-use and handy interface to manage software repositories, giving a chance to many softwares that couldn't make it into the official repositories.

When I moved from Mac OS X to Ubuntu, Ailurus was one of the first softwares I installed. Since then, I never removed it and I keep using it to keep my knowledge about Linux up-to-date and handle unofficial repositories, which is something I like to have ready to use on my Ubuntu Box.

Ailurus should be in the official repositories of Ubuntu and hence can be installed from the Software Center. If it is not there you can find it on the Ailusus website. Download the appropriate DEB file for your version of Ubuntu.
