Use Minitube instead of Youtube

How cool would it be to be able to access the huge archive of videos hosted by YouTube without having to use Flash or visualize all those ads?

Well, now it is possible by installing Minitube, a great software that let's you search and play all the videos of YouTube directly on your desktop without having to get on to Googles popular Youtube website.

Really. There are ads everywhere, unnecessary comments by people who should have their keyboards seized and ultimately a user experience that is much worse than how it would be without those disturbing details.

Minitube is a great and free software which is available for Windows, Mac and, obviously, (Ubuntu) Linux. You can install it on your Ubuntu computer by searching for it in the Ubuntu Software Center or in a few steps, downloading the tar archive from the website and running the binaries in the unzipped folder after opening it.

Minitube features a very easy to navigate interface (superb!) and it includes amazing features like one click download and automatic playback, so that you can set up your list of videos and just enjoy them played one after another. The search feature is as good as the one included on the official website and it doesn't even use Flash, which is probably the huge selling point of this software.

Sadly, Minitube is not free as in speech but just free as in beer, but anyway better than giving away your surfing habits to Google for their profiling purposes. So grab some popcorn, install Minitube and start enjoying hours and hours of videos without having to get through the comments polluting our favorite videos.

Open up a Terminal and insert these commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude install minitube

This will update you to the newest version and always keep you updated. Learn more on the developers website...

    2. Enable HTML5 video
    3. !?!?
    4. Profit!

  2. What does #3 mean? Works like crap?? After restarting Firefox and supposedly having HTML5 enabled, right clicking a video still shows Adobe Flash.

Minitube works pretty good and super friendly to use.

Wow you are like super outrageous towards Google and all their products! Anyway I took your suggestion and installed Minitube, will give it a try. I came across the name way before but never bothered to install.

  4. Thanks for the comment subhadipghosh - Google is getting big, maybe too big for its own good. Its hiring ex military people (DARPA) and has known ties to NSA. Having alternatives is great. Such as using Ubuntu instead of Windows. We are always ready to jump on Microsofts back, but for some reason people almost pride themselves in protecting Google because their products are free (and pretty nice too).

As many of us who switched from Windows and looked for Ubuntu alternatives to Windows apps, so I am doing with Google apps as well. Its a great way to express your freedom too by looking for alternatives.
