While I am a gigantic fan of Ubuntu, it is always interesting what else is going on in the linux world. Ubuntu is based on Debian, a hugely popular & influential version of linux that is known for its strict adherence to the philosophies of free software.
This brings us to SolusOS, a beginner-friendly desktop Linux distribution based on Debian. SolusOS comes with a complete set of multimedia plugins by default. Once you’ve installed SolusOS you’re good to go. Browse the internet, play your latest 3D games or sit back and watch a DVD. Manage your MP3 collection all from one system. The world is yours. Included codecs help ensure you don’t have to worry about your media not being readily playable.
I usually recommend Xubuntu or Lubuntu to friends and family using older computers, but if those dont seem to work out for them I am now recommending SolusOS as everything is ready to go once the OS is installed.
SolusOS comes with a wide range of software already installed that includes the latest LibreOffice Suite, Firefox, Thunderbird, XChat, OpenShot Video Editor, Transmission and VLC. Additional software that is not installed by default can be downloaded using the package manager. PlayOnLinux is preinstalled and aims to simplify the installation of Windows-based applications and especially games on Linux. SolusOS' FirstRunWizard helps installing non-free drivers for NVidia and ATI graphics cards. Wireless chips and modems are supported through non-free firmware packages. Browser plugins such as Java and Flash are preinstalled and ready to use.
Many elements of SolusOS are of their own developments like the graphical installer, the First Run Wizard and the Cardapio menu.
Enjoy all of the comforts of the modern desktop world on an incredibly light system, suitable for old and new computers alike. Robustness does not have to come at a cost of power. I'm currently running SolusOS on an inexpensive & poorly equipped system purchased a few years back and it runs very stable and is still highly usable.

I've been using solus for a few months now and can not say enough good things about this distro,the developer (Ikey Doherty) or the community,top notch all the way around.I predict that in the coming year Solus will be in the top three linux distro's.Watch this one closely because the best is yet to come.
